Get Out of the Box

Woman facing the ocean

How often do we tell ourselves what we like and don’t like? And how different would our lives be, if we didn’t put ourselves into these mentally confined boxes? I imagine things would be a lot more exciting.

Harry Potter

I started to think more about this, when I finally decided to read my first Harry Potter novel – and absolutely fell in love with it. Now I am certainly not the first to fall in love with this wizard, but what struck me was how ridiculously long it took me to finally read the book. The reason? Because once upon a time (ten years ago), I had decided that Harry Potter wasn’t my thing, and I stuck to that story ever since - until a few weeks ago that is.That’s when I got to thinking about how many other things I had “decided” were not for me, without even trying them. And even if I had genuinely given something a try years ago and concluded that it wasn’t for me, that certainly didn’t mean I couldn’t be into it now.

We lose out on so much by putting ourselves into fixed categories & predetermined boxes. To think, that if I had stuck to the idea that wizards weren’t my thing, I would have missed out on this wonderfully whimsical read – and truth be told, I can be quite whimsical myself.

trying something new

We often make huge blanket statements about our interests, and stick to them. And while at one point in our lives, we may not have liked certain films, industries, jobs, music, travel destinations or even certain kinds of people, there’s a big chance that if we were to explore our likes and dislikes from where we stand today, that they would look significantly different. With all the traps that society has planted, be cautious not to add any of your own. Look at things with fresh eyes and a new perspective, you may be pleasantly surprised – and who knows, you may even discover that you’re a wizard too.

Peace, love and freedom,

Diana
